Now that we’re all spending a lot more time at our homes, we owe it to ourselves to make the best of it! That’s why it’s important to make sure that you always keep the spirits high and have recipes on hand to prepare your favorite cocktails. You never know when a spontaneous party will happen. But what is the most popular cocktail for entertaining at home? It’s whichever one you like the best, of course! Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Mojito
When it comes to easy rum cocktails, you can never go wrong with a fresh mojito! All you need to do is muddle 6 fresh mint leaves, add 1 ½ ounces of your favorite white rum, 1 ounce of fresh lime juice, 2 teaspoons of sugar (or simple syrup), and top with a splash of club soda. This drink is best enjoyed on a warm sunny beach, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy one year round!
2. Dry martini
The dry martini is one of the most popular mixed drinks made with vodka, and the big debate is how dry do you want it? You simply need to add a small amount of dry vermouth and your favorite garnish to 3 ounces of vodka or gin. Many bartenders merely rinse the glass with vermouth before adding the chilled vodka. An interesting bit of trivia: true martini enthusiasts don’t believe in shaking their martinis like 007, because ice chips can dilute the spirit. Be sure to have a long-handled spoon with your barware, and stir gently until the drink is sufficiently chilled.
3. Moscow mule
The mule is increasing in popularity, and another great drink for a warm day. All you need to add is 1 ½ ounces of top shelf vodka and a splash of fresh lime juice to a copper mug, and top with ginger beer. Is it really a Moscow Mule if it’s not served in a copper mug? Probably, but would you really want to drink one that way?
4. Gin and tonic
Gin is making a comeback in a major way, and the gin and tonic is a classic cocktail that couldn’t be easier to make. The official recipe calls for equal parts, but you can adjust the recipe to taste depending on your preference for the juniper flavor of gin. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!
5. Manhattan
Even through has been one of the best kept secrets for decades, but shows like Mad Men and Sex and The City have put it back on the map. Just add one part sweet red vermouth to 2 ounces of rye whiskey, and top with a dash of bitters and garnish with a maraschino cherry. Many bars that specialize in mixology offer variations that use Canadian whiskey or even Kentucky bourbon.
We’re all spending a lot more time at home these days, and there’s nothing quite like staging an impromptu cocktail party with your friends. Feel free to experiment with the proportions, spirits, and garnishes to really customize your creations, and enjoy. Most importantly, please enjoy all of these great cocktails responsibly!
